Dental Crowns and Bridges

An example of a dental crown

A dental crown is a restoration that completely covers a damaged, decayed or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Teeth that are severely decayed, cracked, or have undergone root canal treatment usually get a crown.

The steps for crown preparation are:

Preparation:

Dr. Blessing will evaluate the tooth with a visual exam and x-ray. The tooth is then reduced and shaped to accommodate a crown.

Impression:

A physical mold or digital scan of the tooth and surrounding teeth is taken to create a custom crown.

Temporary Crown:

A temporary crown is fabricated to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is being made at the dental lab. This generally takes 1-2 weeks.

Permanent Crown Placement:

The temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is cemented in place. Before cementation the permanent crown is checked for fit, color and bite.

A Dental Bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by bridging the gap with artificial teeth. Neighboring natural teeth or dental implants help anchor the bridge in place. Bridges not only protect and strengthen teeth but also improve a patient’s smile.

The steps for bridge preparation are:

Preparation:

Dr. Blessing will evaluate the teeth recommended for a bridge with a visual exam and x-rays. Adjacent teeth are prepared to accommodate the new crowns.

Impressions:

Physical molds or digital scans are taken to custom-fit bridge.

Temporary Bridge:

A temporary bridge is fabricated to protect the teeth while the permanent bridge is being made at the dental lab. This generally takes 1-2 weeks.

Permanent Bridge Placement:

The temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent crown is bridge is cemented in place. Before cementation the permanent bridge checked for fit, color and bite.
